Sometimes you need to have more control over the trapping process than regular trapping gives you. The “Pull Stick” is an excellent tool for when you need to do selective trapping.

For example when:

  • You have already fixed most of the cats in your colony and you keep re-trapping them
  • The last cat(s) will not go in the trap until they see another cat go in and come out safely
  • There are a litter of kittens, and you are afraid one will trip the foot plate, while another is under the door where it will get hurt

To make a Pull Stick, all you need is stick the height of the trap door, and tie a long string to it. Cutting 3/4″ doweling to the proper height works well- but anything will do the trick. Use this to prop the door open instead of the normal trapping mechanism, and put a large quantity of food in the trap, so multiple cats can come and go, still leaving food for the one you want. Then hide where you can see the trap. Yank (Yank hard to ensure the stick clears the trap fats!) the string to pull the stick out of the way of the door, so the trap closes, only when the cat you want is fully inside the trap, and no other cats are at the door where they will get hurt.
